My First Smack Dab in the Middle Post

I'm super happy to be a part of Smack Dab in the Middle, a blog made up of Middle Grade authors. Every month has a different theme. This month's theme is Summer Reading (man, how I love to read in the summer). Check out my first post: Summer (Reading) in the City. But be forewarned, you will not be able to get a certain song out of your head!

Will I See You? Updated!

Been a bit busy 'round these parts! Busy is good though, right? Right!

So, here's what I've got going on:

On May 15th at 4pm, I'll be a The BookMark Shoppe located at 8415 3rd Avenue Brooklyn. This is an awesome bookstore and the owner's, Christine and Bina, are wonderful!

Starting May 16th (and every month on the 16th) I'll be blogging for the first time at Smack Dab in the Middle. This months theme is Summer Reading. I've got something fun up my sleeve. Just hope I can pull it off!

May 28th at 4pm, I'll be at the Stapleton Branch Library located at 132 Canal Street Staten Island. This library was recently renovated and it's beautiful!

May 31st from 6-8:30, I'll be partying it up with a bunch of other authors at the Kids Author Carnival at Jefferson Market library located at 425 Avenue of the Americas (at 10th Street) NYC. Games + books + Authors = FUN! Doors open at 5:30. I pasted the flyer below.

Not book/author related but, oh so important! Sometime around my birthday (June 23rd), my braces WILL BE COMING OFF!!! I'm already planning my first meal!

JUST ADDED: June 12th (time to follow) I'll be visiting Hamilton Grange Library at 503 W. 145 Street.

July 10th (time to follow), I'm doing a workshop at Imagination Academy at the 67th Street library located at 328 E 67th Street NYC.

That's it for the moment! I hope to see you soon!  Here's the flyer for the Kids Author Carnival:

Swim!

My dad is an awesome swimmer. When he was younger, he and his friends swam from the Red Hook piers (Brooklyn, NY) over to Governors Island and back, numerous times. My mom is petrified of water and cannot swim. I guess you can say that I'm in the middle. I can doggie paddle but that's it. I don't like waves (but love the sound of them) and if I’m at the beach and in the water, I must be able to touch the bottom at all times. I will never take a cruise and if, by some weird situation, I'm ever forced to, I will pack a blow-up dingy.

All this to say that I so admire what this young Olympian is doing (see below). With summer right around the corner, get your kids swimming lessons. Not only can it save lives, but they'll be able to cool off and enjoy themselves. Plus, they won't have to pack a dingy which I imagine, will be a big pain.

Spring and Things

Every year toward the end of Winter, I gleefully point out budding trees to my husband. And every year he denies seeing a single bud. It's become our silly tradition. But this year ... *sigh. I refused to allow myself the spying of buds because it's just been so cold and snowy that I didn't want to be disappointed by the still sleeping buds. But last night, driving home, I noticed the tree branches swaying in the glow of the street lamps and my heart leapt! BUDS! Glorious, glorious, buds! It really is Spring! Oh Spring, how I love you!

Okay, so now that you know all of that ^, I want to share scenes from Saving Baby Doe's book birthday with you! And boy, I sure wish I had one of those cupcakes right now!

What You Don't Know About Bookstore Shelves

Okay, I've been debating on whether or not to write this post but I just gotta. Also, please know the following is about all books, not just mine because all authors work really hard on their books (I'm talking sprouting gray hair, missing important family events and maybe even a few tears) and every book deserves a chance in the world.

Do you guys know that shelf space in a bookstore is expensive and well sort after real estate? What this means is just because a book is on the shelf at this moment doesn't mean that it will always be. If that book doesn't sell pretty quickly, it gets the boot never to return again. Yup, the store will send back any and all books not sold in order to make room for the next book. This doesn't look good at all to the publisher. In fact, the publisher might not ever want another thing that particular author writes.

This is not to blame the bookstore in any way. This is a business and businesses must make money in order to keep their doors open. Plus, I love bookstores and would live in one if I could. Heehee. That goes for libraries too.

So if you're thinking you'd like to read a certain book, please go and get it, otherwise it will disappear like it never even existed.

Post Saving Baby Doe Book Launch

Whewwww! The book launch was so ... GREAT! Guys, if you ever find yourself in Downtown Brooklyn, you must stop into BookCourt General Books (163 Court Street)! From the beautiful space to the awesome people who work there, just wonderful!

The book SOLD OUT and made BookCourt's bestseller list and gets to be placed on a special shelf! *sniff* Did you hear that? THE SPECIAL SHELF! Also, I believe it will be offered at 30% off, so if you want a copy and you're in Brooklyn, get over to BookCourt!

So if it's okay, I'd like to ask two things of you. One, if you read and like Saving Baby Doe (or The Trouble with Half a Moon), could you do me a huge favor and leave a review online? And if you're on goodreads, could you leave one there too and maybe give me some star love? I appreciate any kind of love you're willing to give!

Okay, on to number two. You probably don't know this but shelf space in a bookstore is HOT real estate! That means if the book doesn't sell pretty quickly, they SEND them back to the publisher and will not re-order the book. How stinky is that?! This leads me to ask for another favor, pretty please with sugar on top. If you intend to buy the book (man, I feel terrible asking this! forgive me, please!) don't wait too long? Ewww, now I feel dirty!

If you do get the book and would like a signed bookplate, bookmark and related swag (free, of course!), just email or message me and I'll get everything out to you asap.

I want you to know how much I appreciate all of your help. The job of being an author does not stop after the writing is done. We have to then fight for our babies so that they'll be out in the world happy, healthy and reaching the people they need to reach. So a big THANK YOU goes out to you!

Anyway, here are some cool photos from the launch!!

This last photo is my childhood BFF who I haven't seen in years! Yay! So good to see her!

SAVING BABY DOE book trailer! Yeehawww!

I write this post sending virtual hugs to Betsy Bird at fuse #8. Today, she generously revealed the trailer for SAVING BABY DOE. I'm feeling all the mushy feels ... :D

Before I post the link, I'd like to say that if you're in need of a book trailer, Tim Eddy from nifty productions, is definitely your guy. I really can't say enough good things about him. Okay, I'll try. He's smart, he 'gets' books, is easy to work with, responds to emails quickly and his fee is extremely reasonable. Like, I didn't HAVE to steal cash out of my daughter's piggy bank to pay him! So, Tim, Tim, he's your man, if he can't do it ... well you know the rest!

Hey, I'm gonna post the link to the trailer now. You may want to pop some popcorn. Go ahead, I'll wait.

Food Drive

This is such an awesome idea, I just had to share it with you!

In my first book, The Trouble with Half a Moon, Dellie, the main character, rescues a little boy who never has enough to eat. Sadly, this part of the story is true for me. As a kid, I knew a little boy in this situation. So, when I came across this article today, I thought, BRILLIANT! Feeding the hungry has just been made easier.

If you're able to, please consider donating. I'm off to do it right now. No one should go hungry, especially children.
